Lionel Messi continued his blistering form in Major League Soccer by scoring twice to lead Inter Miami to a 2-1 win over New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday, becoming the first player in league history to score multiple goals in four consecutive regular season matches.
The Argentine superstar opened the scoring in the 27th minute after a series of early chances and doubled the lead in the 38th with a low left-footed strike from the top of the box, set up by a precise through ball from Sergio Busquets.
With eight goals in his last four MLS outings, Messi now has 14 goals and seven assists in just 15 matches this season. His performance powered Miami to another vital win following their FIFA Club World Cup campaign.
Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano praised his former Argentina teammate, saying, “I always say Leo is a special player. For me, the best player that has played this sport in history. It’s unbelievable what he continues to do — we’re lucky to have him.”
Messi’s scoring streak began in the matches against CF Montreal and Columbus Crew before the mid-season break. He added two more against Montreal on Saturday and followed it up with another brace against New England, taking his tally of goal contributions for Inter Miami to a club-record 58.
The 2022 World Cup winner also holds the league record for most assists (5) and goal contributions (6) in a single MLS match. In 2024, he won the Landon Donovan MLS MVP award and was instrumental in Inter Miami’s record-breaking Supporters’ Shield campaign, where the club amassed a league-high 74 points.
