India clinched three silver medals on the second day of the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad, with Bindyarani Devi, Muthupandi Raja and Sneha Soren finishing second in their respective events.

Bindyarani Devi secured silver in the women’s 58kg category with a total lift of 206kg. She cleared 85kg, 88kg and 91kg in snatch, followed by 110kg and 115kg in clean and jerk. Her final attempt at 122kg was unsuccessful. Australia’s Kiana Elliott took gold with 212kg (100kg snatch, 112kg clean and jerk).

Bindyarani previously won silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the 55kg division. She was also a gold medallist in 2019 and silver medallist in 2021 at the Commonwealth level.

In the men’s 65kg, Muthupandi Raja narrowly missed out on gold with a total lift of 296kg (128kg snatch, 168kg clean and jerk). Malaysia’s Muhamad Aznil Bin Bidin won gold by a single kilogram with 297kg (125kg, 172kg). Papua New Guinea’s Moria Baru earned bronze with 292kg.

Sneha Soren lifted a total of 185kg (81kg snatch, 104kg clean and jerk) in the senior women’s 53kg to win silver. Nigeria’s Omolola Onome Didih took gold with 197kg (90kg, 107kg).

Seventeen-year-old Koyel Bar drew attention with record-breaking lifts in the women’s 53kg youth category. She posted 85kg in snatch and 107kg in clean and jerk for a total of 192kg, setting new youth world records in total and clean and jerk.

The championships, now in its 30th edition, feature over 300 lifters from 31 nations.

Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Mirabai Chanu had opened India’s campaign on Monday with a gold in the women’s 48kg, securing qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Only winners in each senior category gain automatic qualification.
