Defending champions NorthEast United FC will take on Shillong Lajong FC in the first semifinal of the 134th Durand Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday, in a repeat of last year’s last-four encounter.

The Highlanders had beaten Lajong 3-0 at the same stage in 2023 en route to lifting their maiden Durand title. But the I-League outfit is determined to push harder this time, buoyed by an in-form attack and a charged home crowd.

NorthEast have been in fluent touch under coach Juan Pedro Benali, topping Group E with two wins and a draw before sweeping past Bodoland FC 4-0 in the quarterfinals. Moroccan striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie has been the star, scoring seven goals in five matches, supported by Jithin M.S. and Lalrinzuala.

“We have given our 100% and we will continue to do the same tomorrow. Pressure is always there, but we know how to manage it. We describe our team as a Wolfpack,” said NEUFC captain Michel Zabaco.

Lajong, coached by Birendra Thapa, advanced as group runners-up and then edged Indian Navy FT 2-1 in the quarters. Damaitphang Lyngdoh and Everbrightson Sana struck in that comeback win, while Phrangki Buam, Sana and Figo Syndai have together accounted for nine of the team’s 12 goals so far.

“We are ready for the match tomorrow, we know it’s do-or-die, and we are prepared to give everything we have,” said skipper Kenstar Kharshong, urging local supporters to fill the stands.

The buzz has been evident. General tickets were sold out within minutes, with NEUFC fans flooding social media with “Semis bound—Let’s go! #StrongerAsOne” while Lajong supporters rallied around the Khasi cry “Sarong ia ka Lajong!”

NorthEast coach Benali acknowledged the challenge ahead: “Shillong Lajong are a much better team this year. It’s always tough to play against them, and tomorrow won’t be any different.” Thapa too sounded optimistic: “We have lost to them twice, but our approach will be different in tomorrow’s match. The team is more confident compared to last year.”

With Spanish duo Andy Rodriguez and Chema Núnez pulling the strings for NEUFC and Lajong’s high press led by Gladdy Kharbuli and Treimiki Lamurong, the semifinal promises intensity on the pitch.

The Northeast derby, played under misty skies and echoing drums in Shillong, will decide whether the Highlanders march toward back-to-back titles or if Lajong script history by booking their first Durand Cup final berth.
