One of the founding teams of the Indian Super League (ISL), NorthEast United FC have experienced a rollercoaster journey since their inception. While they may not rank among the league’s most decorated sides, with just three playoff appearances, the Highlanders have carved a niche for themselves by nurturing young talent and passionately representing the football-loving region of Northeast India.

Celebrating their journey, here’s a look at NorthEast United FC’s all-time ISL XI — players who left a lasting impact on and off the pitch.

Goalkeeper: TP Rehenesh
A mainstay in the early years, Rehenesh made 49 appearances across five seasons, registering 13 clean sheets and 142 saves. His grit and consistency edge him past current No. 1 Gurmeet Singh for the all-time spot.

Defenders:
Right-back: Reagan Singh
A reliable performer, Reagan played 69 matches and was instrumental during the club’s first-ever semi-final run in 2018-19.

Left-back: Gurjinder Kumar
A tireless worker, Gurjinder featured prominently during the club’s 2020-21 playoff season. Buanthanglun Samte was also considered, but Gurjinder’s consistency earned him the spot.

Centre-backs: Michel Zabaco and Asheer Akhtar
Zabaco has been a transformational figure under head coach Juan Pedro Benali, helping the club rise from bottom finishers in 2022-23 to playoff qualifiers in 2024-25. Partnering him is Asheer Akhtar, who has been a defensive rock over the past two seasons.

Midfielders:
Defensive Midfield: Mohammed Ali Bemammer
One of the best midfielders in ISL over the past two seasons, the Moroccan has excelled in both passing and defensive transitions.

Central Midfield: Rowllin Borges
Borges, who rose to prominence during the 2018-19 season, played a key role in the club’s historic semi-final run, contributing four goals and two assists.

Attacking Midfield: Federico Gallego
A fan favourite, Gallego scored nine goals and assisted 11 in 47 games. His creativity and leadership were key in two semifinal appearances.

Forwards:
Right Wing: Parthib Gogoi
An emerging star, Gogoi has become known for his long-range strikes and consistent goal contributions — 10 goals and 8 assists in 57 matches.

Left Wing: Jithin MS
Versatile and dynamic, Jithin has notched 15 goal contributions in 50+ appearances, narrowly edging out Imran Khan for this spot.

Centre Forward: Alaaeddine Ajaraie
The 2024-25 season belonged to Ajaraie, who broke ISL records with 23 goals and 7 assists in a single season, sealing his place in Highlanders’ history.

Head Coach: Juan Pedro Benali
Benali brought stability and success to the club, transforming them from bottom-dwellers to playoff contenders. His tenure also saw NorthEast United lift their first silverware — the Durand Cup.

As the Highlanders look to the future, this all-time XI stands as a reminder of their passion, potential, and the pride they continue to evoke in Northeast India.
