Neymar Jr. has extended his contract with Santos FC until the end of December 2025, reaffirming his short-term commitment to the club where his professional journey began. The 33-year-old forward returned to the Brazilian side in January following an injury-plagued stint with Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal.

“I extended my contract with Santos. I went, I came back and I stay where it all began and where it will never end,” Neymar said in a video posted on social media.

The extension comes despite speculation that he might sign on until mid-2026 to align with the next FIFA World Cup. Neither Neymar nor Santos offered an explanation for the shorter duration. Earlier this month, Brazil’s new head coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed hope that Neymar would be fit for the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Since his return, Neymar has featured in 12 matches for Santos, contributing three goals and three assists. However, his playing time has been limited due to recurring muscle injuries.

His most recent appearance, on 1 June, ended in controversy after he was sent off in the 76th minute of a 1–0 home loss to Botafogo. Attempting to score with his hand after misjudging a cross, Neymar received a second yellow card and saw the goal disallowed. Botafogo netted the winner in the 86th minute.

Neymar’s first spell at Santos saw him score 138 goals in 225 appearances, helping the club win six major trophies. However, the club has struggled since his return, sitting 15th in the Brazilian league table with just 11 points from 12 matches.

His departure from Al-Hilal came after just seven appearances and a serious ACL injury that kept him out for nearly a year. The Saudi club ended his contract early, stating Neymar could no longer perform at his previous level.

Despite his critics, Neymar remains a central figure in Brazil’s football landscape. His return to Santos offers a chance to rebuild fitness and form as he eyes a potential last shot at World Cup glory.
