Manolo Marquez’s stint as head coach of the Indian men’s football team has come to an end, as the All India Football Federation (AIFF) confirmed a mutual decision to part ways following a series of disappointing performances that saw India drop to 127th in the FIFA rankings.
The move was finalised during the AIFF Executive Committee meeting held on Wednesday, after President Kalyan Chaubey had earlier indicated that Marquez’s role would be reviewed.
The Spaniard’s exit follows a frustrating start to India’s AFC Asian Cup Qualifying campaign, with the team being held to a goalless draw against Bangladesh before suffering a last-minute 1-0 defeat to Hong Kong — results that raised serious concerns over the national team’s progress.
Marquez was appointed in 2024, succeeding Igor Stimac. However, India registered just one win in eight matches under his leadership — a 3-0 friendly victory against the Maldives — giving him a win percentage of only 13%.
Despite the struggles with the national team, Marquez had an impressive record in Indian club football. He joined Hyderabad FC in the 2020–21 Indian Super League season and led them to the ISL title in 2022. Over three seasons, he managed 74 games with 37 wins and 21 draws.
He later took charge of FC Goa, guiding them to a Super Cup triumph. During his time as national coach, he continued to serve as FC Goa’s head coach — a dual role that attracted both praise and criticism. His record with the Goan club includes 38 wins, 12 draws, and 12 defeats in 62 games.
Following the draw against Bangladesh, Marquez had openly expressed his frustration with the state of Indian football, remarking:
“Maybe this is the reality of Indian football. The positive is that we didn’t concede, despite the chances they had.”
With Marquez’s exit confirmed, the AIFF is expected to begin its search for a new head coach ahead of India’s upcoming international assignments.
