NorthEast United FC captain Michel Zabaco has extended his contract with the club until the end of the 2025-26 season, the Guwahati-based Indian Super League side confirmed on Monday.
The 36-year-old Spanish centre-back joined the club from Burgos CF ahead of the 2023-24 season. Since his arrival, he has been a key figure in defence, noted for his leadership and positional play. Zabaco captained the side during its Durand Cup triumph in 2024, converting a penalty in the final as the Highlanders secured their first major title with a 4-3 win over Mohun Bagan SG.
Zabaco was named club captain ahead of the 2024-25 season after wearing the armband on several occasions in his debut year.
“NorthEast United FC has been my home for the past two years, and my family is happily settled here. It’s been an incredible journey with this group, who have become like family to me. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved so far, and I’m excited to continue working towards more success with the club,” Zabaco said.
Head coach Juan Pedro Benali praised Zabaco’s impact, calling him “a true captain who leads by example”, while club CEO Mandar Tamhane described him as a “role model for the younger players”.
