FC Goa return to Asian competition on September 17 as they host Iraqi club Al Zawraa in their AFC Champions League Two group stage opener at Fatorda. This marks the Gaurs’ second continental campaign, but their first in front of home fans.
Head coach Manolo Marquez enters his third season with a side that reached the group stage after a 2–1 win over Al Seeb in the preliminary round. FC Goa are placed in a demanding group alongside Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr and Tajikistan’s Ishtiqlol FC.
The Gaurs face injury concerns, with defender Sandesh Jhingan doubtful due to a facial injury sustained during national duty. Marquez is expected to rely on all six foreign players, including David Timor, Pol Moreno and Javi Siverio, who impressed in their first competitive outing.
Al Zawraa, making their sixth appearance in the competition, come with significant international experience, including eight Iraq internationals. Led by new head coach Abdul Ghani Shahzad, the Baghdad side includes key players like Jalal Hassan, Reziq Bani Hani and Mohammed Qasim. The club’s aerial strength and presence in second-ball situations are expected to pose challenges.
Tactical battles are likely across the pitch, with FC Goa needing discipline out of possession, control in midfield and effective set-piece execution to challenge the Iraqi side. The match is expected to hinge on transitional moments, pressing intensity, and game management during key phases.
With continental football returning to Fatorda with fans in attendance, FC Goa aim to make a strong start and embrace the underdog role in a tough group.
