Bihar have appointed 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi as vice-captain for the opening two matches of the upcoming Ranji Trophy season, with Sakibul Gani leading the side. The announcement was made by the Bihar Cricket Association on Sunday.

The Plate League fixture against Arunachal Pradesh begins on October 15 at the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna. Bihar were relegated to the plate division after failing to win a single match in the previous season.

Suryavanshi, a left-handed batter, became the youngest player in Ranji Trophy history to be named a team’s vice-captain. He debuted in the competition at 12 during the 2023–24 season and went on to become the youngest player to sign an IPL contract when Rajasthan Royals picked him at 13.

He scored a 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans in this year’s IPL, marking the second fastest in the league and making him the youngest player (14) to score a T20 century in men’s cricket.

Suryavanshi has also featured in India’s Under-19 tours to England and Australia and is likely to miss part of the Ranji season due to possible selection for the Under-19 World Cup in Zimbabwe and Namibia early next year.

Bihar squad: Piyush Kumar Singh, Bhashkar Dubey, Sakibul Gani (c), Vaibhav Suryavanshi (vc), Arnav Kishor, Ayush Loharuka, Bipin Saurabh, Amod Yadav, Nawaz Khan, Sakib Hussain, Raghvendra Pratap Singh, Sachin Kumar Singh, Himanshu Singh, Khalid Alam, Sachin Kumar.
