Shubman Gill has scored 722 runs in the ongoing five-Test series against England, becoming the second-highest scoring debut Test captain after Sir Donald Bradman, who made 810 runs in 1936–37.
Gill also became only the third Test captain to score four centuries in a single series, matching the records of Bradman (1947–48 vs India) and Sunil Gavaskar (1978–79 vs West Indies). He is the first to do so in an overseas series.
The milestone was reached at Old Trafford when Gill took a single off Chris Woakes to bring up his fourth hundred of the series—his ninth in Tests. His celebration included a raised bat and helmet, with a kiss blown to the crowd, who responded with a standing ovation.
Shubman Gill now shares the Indian record for most centuries in a single Test series with Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli, who each scored four centuries in previous campaigns.
Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja became the third player to record over 1000 runs and 30 wickets in a single foreign country. With 1000* runs and 34 wickets in England, he joins Wilfred Rhodes (England in Australia) and Garry Sobers (West Indies in England).
