Indian wicketkeeper‑batter Rishabh Pant on Wednesday became the first to score 1,000‑plus Test runs in an away country, reaching the milestone during the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester.
Pant made 37* off 48 balls before retiring hurt with a foot injury. He struck two fours and a six at a strike rate of over 77. With this, he reached 1,018 runs in England at an average of 44.26, including four centuries and four fifties. His best score remains 146.
No wicketkeeper‑batter had previously scored 1,000 Test runs outside his home country. Pant now also holds the record for most Test runs by a visiting wicketkeeper‑batter in England, surpassing MS Dhoni’s 778.
He is the sixth Indian batter to complete 1,000 Test runs in England, joining Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.
Pant was taken off the field on a buggy after a blow to his foot caused visible swelling and bleeding. His fitness remains under assessment, with scan results awaited. Batter Sai Sudharsan said, “He was in a lot of pain definitely, but they have gone for scans. We’ll get to know overnight, probably get the information tomorrow.”
India ended day one on 264/4, with Shardul Thakur on 19* and Ravindra Jadeja on 16*. Sai Sudharsan scored 61 and Yashasvi Jaiswal made 58. England captain Ben Stokes claimed 2/47, dismissing Shubman Gill and Sudharsan.
