Prithvi Shaw made a memorable start to his stint with Maharashtra, scoring a fighting century against Chhattisgarh on the second day of the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament at Guru Nanak College on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old opener, who moved from Mumbai earlier this year, reached his hundred off 122 deliveries, striking 14 fours and a six. Shaw displayed patience and application on a tricky pitch with uneven bounce, bringing up the milestone in the 44th over with a boundary. He was eventually dismissed as Maharashtra folded for 217. Chhattisgarh ended the day at 43, leading by 78 runs.

The knock came a day after his former Mumbai teammate Sarfaraz Khan also struck a century for Mumbai against TNCA XI in the same tournament. Shaw, who last played for India in July 2021, has scored 4,556 runs in 58 first-class matches at an average of 46.02.

In another match, Punjab all-rounder Ramandeep Singh registered his maiden century in competitive cricket, smashing 111 off 101 balls against Hyderabad. Walking in with Punjab struggling at 168/4, he struck four boundaries and eight sixes before being dismissed.

Ramandeep, who has played five first-class matches with a best score of 69*, showcased his power-hitting skills in the non-first-class tournament. Punjab, however, lost wickets in clusters despite his counter-attacking knock.

The Buchi Babu tournament, traditionally considered a key platform for domestic players, is being staged across venues in Tamil Nadu with state and institutional teams in action.
