Australia allrounder Cameron Green became the most expensive overseas player in Indian Premier League history after being bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 25.20 crore at the IPL 2026 mini-auction in Abu Dhabi on December 16.
Green surpassed the previous overseas record of Rs 24.75 crore set by Mitchell Starc in the 2024 auction. The 26-year-old’s acquisition followed a prolonged bidding war involving Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, with KKR ultimately securing the player.
The deal also set a global record for the highest bid for any overseas cricketer in franchise-based T20 leagues. Green’s versatility as a top-order batter, pace bowler and fielder was seen as a key asset, driving up demand among franchises.
The bidding started at Green’s base price and escalated quickly. As the figure crossed Rs 20 crore, the auction hall witnessed loud applause, underlining the moment’s significance.
KKR entered the auction with the largest purse and had identified Green as a central figure for the 2026 season. The team plans to pair him with a core of established overseas pacers and emerging Indian players.
Green’s record signing highlighted a trend of franchises valuing players who offer long-term utility. While several big names remained unsold or fetched modest sums, Green’s deal reaffirmed the financial muscle and competitive nature of the IPL.
