India batter Ruturaj Gaikwad said he is delighted to return to the national set-up as the hosts prepare for the three-match ODI series against South Africa beginning Sunday at the JSCA International Stadium.
With Shubman Gill sidelined by a neck injury and Shreyas Iyer ruled out with a spleen injury, Gaikwad was named in the squad led by KL Rahul. Speaking in a video posted by the BCCI on X during the team’s photoshoot, he said, “It’s good to be back in blue and really looking forward to again playing for Team India.”
Gaikwad last played an ODI on December 19, 2023, in Gqeberha. His most recent international appearance came in a T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare on July 13, 2024.
Bowling coach Morne Morkel praised the 27-year-old’s recall on Friday, calling him a quality player who could make the country proud if given an opportunity.
Ruturaj Gaikwad forced his way back into the ODI squad with strong performances in the recent 50-over series against South Africa A in Rajkot. With Iyer unavailable, he could be in contention for the number four position, though left-handers Tilak Varma and Rishabh Pant remain the primary candidates.
After the opener in Ranchi, the series will move to Raipur and Visakhapatnam.
