Mohun Bagan Super Giant lifted their first IFA Shield title in 22 years after defeating arch-rivals East Bengal 5-4 on penalties in the final at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Saturday.
The match ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time. East Bengal’s Moroccan forward Hamid Ahadad opened the scoring in the 37th minute, before Bagan midfielder Apuia equalised just before half-time with a long-range effort.
The second half and extra time remained goalless, sending the match into a penalty shootout. Bagan striker Jason Cummings had missed a penalty during regulation time, but the team kept their composure in the shootout, despite East Bengal changing their goalkeeper.
Mehtab Singh scored the decisive penalty to seal the victory for Mohun Bagan, securing their 21st IFA Shield title and their first Kolkata derby win of the season. The win ends Mohun Bagan’s IFA Shield drought since 2003.
