India head coach Khalid Jamil has called for an attacking approach and improved midfield control as his side prepares to face Singapore in a crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifying match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on October 14.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Monday, Jamil said, “We have to take forward where we left in the last match and we have to play attacking football.” India held Singapore to a 1-1 draw away last week despite being reduced to ten men, but remain without a win in three matches, sitting on two points.

Jamil emphasised the importance of a positive mindset. “We have to be positive. They are a good side, are difficult to beat. We have to give our best and stay positive,” he said.

The coach did not reveal the starting XI but highlighted the need for cohesion and responsibility across the squad. “All players must play as a unit and take responsibility. You should have control,” he added.

On veteran forward Sunil Chhetri, who came out of retirement in 2024 for the qualifiers, Jamil said, “We are not thinking far ahead. We want him to perform tomorrow and that is what we are focusing on.”

India are currently in fourth place in their group with two points from three matches, while Singapore are second with five points, behind leaders Hong Kong.
