Ghana secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Comoros in their final Group I qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday. The result sees the Black Stars finish top of the group with 25 points, earning the sole automatic slot to the tournament.
Mohammed Kudus scored the only goal of the match in the 47th minute, shortly after the break, sending the home crowd of nearly 35,000 into celebration. The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder capitalised on sustained pressure from the hosts, who required only a draw to progress but opted for an attacking approach.
Comoros, who had inflicted Ghana’s only defeat of the campaign earlier in the qualifiers, created an early scare with a third-minute attempt but were denied by a sharp Ghanaian defence.
Madagascar finished second in the group with 19 points, followed by Mali with 18. Comoros ended with 15, the Central African Republic with eight, and Chad with one.
This will be Ghana’s fifth World Cup appearance, following participations in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022. The team’s best finish remains the quarterfinal run in 2010.
