Lionel Messi struck twice in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Venezuela in the South American qualifiers, but the captain admitted he remains uncertain about featuring in next year’s World Cup.
The 38-year-old, who has been troubled by injuries and missed several matches for his MLS club Inter Miami, said his age and fitness will determine whether he appears on football’s biggest stage again.
“In the past, I’ve said it was unlikely I’d play in a World Cup at 39. It’s nine months away, which feels both close and far,” Messi told reporters at the Monumental Stadium on Thursday night.
“I love this game, I love playing, and I never want it to end. But I know the moment is coming. It will happen when it has to happen.”
Argentina have already booked their place in the tournament, but head coach Lionel Scaloni opted to rest Messi for the final qualifier against Ecuador in Guayaquil on Tuesday.
Messi, who looked sharp against Venezuela, stressed that his decision will depend on how he feels physically.
“When I feel good, I enjoy myself. When I don’t, it’s very difficult, and I’d rather not be on the pitch,” he said. “So, we’ll see.”
