Harmanpreet Kaur will captain India for the first time in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, with Smriti Mandhana as her deputy, as the BCCI on Tuesday announced a 15-member squad for the 2025 edition of the tournament and the preceding Australia ODI series.

The World Cup will be played in India from September 30 to November 2. India will take on Sri Lanka in the tournament opener in Bengaluru.

India, who finished runners-up to England in a tense final at Lord’s in 2017, will look to go one step further this time. Shafali Verma missed out on the squad, while Pratika Rawal and Harleen Deol earned call-ups after consistent domestic and franchise performances.

Wicketkeepers Yastika Bhatia and Richa Ghosh both found places in the squad. Renuka Singh, who has been out since March with a stress fracture, returned to the team and will make her comeback against Australia in September. Fast-bowling all-rounder Amanjot Kaur was named in the World Cup squad but has been rested for the Australia series.

Before the World Cup, India will host Australia for a three-match ODI series on September 14, 17, and 20. The first two matches will be played in Mullanpur, and the final game will be held in New Delhi.
