Barcelona’s teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal has officially been handed the club’s iconic No. 10 jersey — a number forever associated with the legendary Lionel Messi.

The announcement was made on Wednesday during a closed-door event organised by the club, where Yamal celebrated his new long-term deal alongside family. The 18-year-old recently extended his contract until 2031, further underlining Barça’s faith in him as the next big star at Camp Nou.

Yamal takes over the shirt from Ansu Fati, who struggled to live up to expectations after inheriting it post-Messi and is currently on loan at AS Monaco.

A symbolic transition

Born in July 2007 — a time when Messi was already dazzling in the famous number — Yamal has rapidly ascended through the club’s ranks. He made his senior debut in the 2022–23 season wearing No. 41, before switching to No. 27 and then No. 19 — incidentally, the same number Messi wore before inheriting the 10.

Now, just days after celebrating his 18th birthday, Yamal takes centre stage as the club’s new No. 10, following in the footsteps of not just Messi, but also the likes of Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Romário, and Diego Maradona.

The winger had teased the shirt switch on social media earlier this week, posting photos of Barça icons in the No. 10 jersey — a move that ignited fan speculation and anticipation.

Controversy surrounds celebrations

Yamal’s birthday festivities, however, have not gone unnoticed off the pitch. Spanish authorities have reportedly launched an inquiry into potential breaches of disability laws, following allegations that people with dwarfism were hired as entertainment during his party. The matter remains under investigation.

Achievements already stacking up

Despite his youth, Yamal’s rise has been meteoric. He has already made 106 appearances and scored 25 goals for the senior team, contributing to two LaLiga titles, a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Supercopa.

His influence has extended to the international stage as well, playing a key role in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 victory earlier this summer. With composure beyond his years and dazzling footwork, Yamal is being heralded as a future leader for both club and country.

Now, as he dons the most symbolic shirt in Barcelona history, all eyes will be on the teenager to carry the torch once lit by Messi — a legacy that demands brilliance.
