NorthEast United FC on Wednesday announced the departure of Moroccan midfielder Mohammed Ali Bemammer, bringing an end to his impactful two-year spell with the Indian Super League side.
The 35-year-old, who joined the Highlanders ahead of the 2023–24 season, played a key role in the club’s turnaround under head coach Juan Pedro Benali. Known for his composure and tactical intelligence, Bemammer anchored the midfield, seamlessly linking defence and attack.
He made an immediate impression, helping NorthEast United climb from the bottom of the table in the previous season to a seventh-place finish, missing the playoffs by just a single point.
The 2024–25 season began on a high as the Highlanders clinched their first-ever piece of silverware — the Durand Cup — defeating Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the final. Bemammer’s influence remained central to the side’s success.
Building on his strong debut season, the Moroccan veteran added four goal contributions in the most recent league campaign, a notable improvement from his solitary contribution the year before. His performances were crucial in guiding the club to their first ISL playoffs appearance since the 2020–21 season.
Over his two-year stint, Bemammer made 43 appearances in the ISL and over 50 across all competitions for NorthEast United FC.
The club is yet to announce a replacement for the experienced midfielder.
